Computer games have come quite a long way from the beginning with many innovative and new iterations of technology. However before we had our advanced technology there was one system that strongly made a significant mark in the computer game history prior to 2k. That system being the Playstation one. The Sony Playstation was made in a collaboration with Nintendo as an add-on for the SNES console to allow it to read discs rather than cartridges. However due to Nintendo calling off the deal to work with Sony's rivalry Phillips this caused Sony to create a system out off the add-on itself, which is now known as the Playstation. Because of how the Playstation used CD-roms instead of cartridges, it allowed for more data to be stored, which allowed for more detailed video games. However, while the disc wasn't used first by Playstation, this console popularised the usage of discs much more than the 2 consoles prior to the Playstation, the Phillips and Sega Saturn. One other way that the Playstation changed the computer game industry was with the power to play 3D games. While Sega had a console that supported 3D, it was more supportive towards 2D where as the play station strongly supported and played 3D games with relative ease. Hypothetically if the Playstation wasn't created, this would have lowered the bar for 3D gaming as when the Play station was announced the competitor at the time was the Nintendo 64. Due to how Sony left a good impression on 3D gaming, it caused Nintendo to hold back on the release of the Nintendo 64 numerous times. So in summary, with out the play station leaving a mark in computer gaming with usage of discs and 3D technology it could have cause lower quality in games and computer systems due to the lack of competition it created with Nintendo.
